Durham Cathedral in LEGO

Durham Cathedral have been in touch regarding the ongoing fundraising project Open Treasure, Open Treasure. The development project aims to “open up this magnificent building further, contribute to its conservation and ensure that entry remains free for everyone”.

The LEGO building was designed by Duncan Titmarsh and his Bright Bricks team. It is estimated the build, which will take two to three years to complete, will consist of 300,000 bricks with expected dimensions of 3.84m long, 1.53m wide and 1.7m tall.

So far the project has raised £20,000 in the ten weeks it has been running and has attracted contributors from as far away as Germany and former England cricketer Phil Tuffnell!

So how can you get involved? Well here is a bit of background on Durham Cathedral and how you can go about contributing to this worthwhile cause.

In 1093 the foundations of Durham Cathedral were laid. 40 years later the magnificent structure was completed and it has dominated the city’s skyline ever since.

With the pioneering spirit of the Cathedral’s founder, Bishop William of St Calais, as our inspiration, we hope to recreate the construction of Durham Cathedral in LEGO bricks to raise funds for Open Treasure. This development project will transform public access to some of the Cathedral’s most spectacular spaces and to the breathtaking collections that it has acquired over the centuries.

The 200,000 brick model will be as accurate a scale representation of the Cathedral as possible, spanning 3.84m metres in length, 1.53 metres wide and 1.7 metres in height.

The LEGO Quire and Nave will slide apart so that the interior of the Cathedral can also be viewed. On completion of the build there will then be the chance to help re-create the Miner’s Gala service in the Nave using LEGO Mini-figures.

How can you get involved?

To build this impressive model we need your help and invite you to support us by buying a brick. For every £1 donated, one LEGO brick will be added to the Cathedral. Each LEGO brick laid will represent support for the Cathedral’s Open Treasure project and signify coming together as a community to achieve great things, just as the Community of St Cuthbert did nearly one thousand years ago.

How to donate?

There are three different ways you can lend your support.

1. In Person

Come and visit us at the Cathedral and see first-hand how the model is progressing. You will have the opportunity to buy bricks and personally place them on the structure with the help of our trained LEGO volunteers.

Opening times are;

Monday to Saturday 9.30am – 4.00pm
Sunday 12.00pm – 4.00pm

2. Online

You can add bricks to the model any time by visiting www.durhamcathedral.co.uk and donating online. Once you’ve donated you can watch the progress of the model to date and receive a special thank you from one of our celebrity Open Treasure Champions.

You can choose to come in and build your donated section in person or with a group of friends. Alternatively our team of trained LEGO volunteers will add your bricks for you.

Everyone who makes a gift of £5 or more will be listed on our website and in a special inaugural exhibition brochure for Open Treasure. Your name will also feature in the Durham Times, an Open Treasure Media Partner, and we will be sure to send you regular updates on the Cathedral, the Open Treasure project and of course, the construction of the LEGO model.

3. By post

If you would like to send a donation by post, email info@builtwithbricks.co.uk and we will forward you a copy of the PDF to print, complete and return.

LEGO revenue rises by 13%

LEGOLEGO have announced a 13% revenue increase for the first half of 2013 compared with the same period last year.

Commenting on the financial result, LEGO Group CEO Jørgen Vig Knudstorp says:

“It is a very satisfactory result in view of general developments in the world toy market which has had a slow start to the year in the largest and most mature markets of North America, Europe and Japan. Despite this tough dynamic, our data indicates that consumer sales of LEGO® products for the first half of 2013 grew 9% globally versus the same period a year ago. In addition, our sales in the first half of 2013 have been increased  by the fact that inventory of LEGO products at retailers was very low going into the first quarter due to a successful end of year in 2012. This meant that we needed to restock retailer’s shelves with new products, and now stocks are at a more healthy level going into the second half of 2013 providing improved availability for shoppers.”
